Well, Jerry Falwell has gone to his great reward. What a figure in our recent history–such a product of his time and place. I remember as a kid going to Lynchburg for shoes (there was a shoe factory there with an outlet). Little did I know then that salvation was just around the corner. I’m inspired by the response of Soulforce, a non-violent movment among GLBT Christians born literally across the street from Jerry Falwell’s church. They both recognize the loss experienced by Fallwell’s family and church, while also lamenting his own loss of never recognizing the enormity of God’s fully embracing love. Thank God for Soulforce.

I was experiencing my own angst about Falwell’s death. Knowing the kinds of hateful and intolerant things he said to entire groups of people, placing blame and pointing fingers (not to mention the arrogance of assuming there is only one set of beliefs for all Christians to have…and they are his), it is very tempting to be grateful that his voice is silenced. But that is my baser side I must admit for it assumes that he is the “other” and totally unlike me. And that, of course, is an error. He was passionate about his beliefs and that I admire, even as I am not convinced compassion for others was what drove his zeal. I am comfortable in the knowledge that we shall all reap what we sow. May God have mercy on his soul and provide comfort to his family.
