Let us remember that we do not give just for other's benefit. We give because it softens our hearts and humbles our haughty spirits. And, we give because we are compelled by a passion to do so. It doesn't matter if the giving is to ourselves or to others. I think giving is what makes us human.

It would seem to be a tension, to want to give and to give without wondering if its too much, but also realize that wondering if its too much is a really human thing to do. Dorothy Day was always unflinching about this--giving was giving, period, you don't count it out, you just give. One could dismiss that by saying she is becoming a saint for being like that--but I'm reminded that she bristled against that suggestion while she was alive saying she did not want to be dismissed so easily.
